Names for different designs of boards vary somewhat from continent to continent which causes some confusion but since this is a British Site and we are a British Shop we will give you the British way, except not all British surfers will agree on it...

Real surfboards have pointy noses but to help reduce confusion we call them "Shortboards". At the other end of the scale we have Longboards which are better known as "Mal's" (or Malibu's). Marry these two designs together to get the best of both worlds and you have "The Mini-Mal", a design which has been largely responsible for introducing droves of newcomers into surfing.

Sometimes Mini-mals have been described as "the one board that the whole family can ride" as they are the most single versatile surfboard design.

For the majority of people the best first board to buy will be a Mini-mal and every home should have one. It's the first board in your "quiver" and you'll be glad to have one handy even after you've moved onto more challenging board designs...
